Lebas, Louis-Hippolyte
Lebas, Louis-Hippolyte (1782–1867). French architect trained by A. -L. -T. Vaudoyer and Percier and Fontaine. He designed Notre-Dame-de-Lorette, Paris (1823–36), on a basilican plan with a noble portico of the Corinthian Order and an interior entirely Early Christian in style, multi-coloured. The clerestorey is carried on an Ionic colonnade, the ceiling is coffered, and the east end is apsidal. In 1825 he won the competition to design a model prison on the site of La Roquette, Paris, in the form of a huge hexagon with six wings linked to the central chapel (destroyed 1973). Among his pupils were the Labrouste brothers and Charles Garnier.
