Born Maria Jane Taylor, July 21, 1844, on Norfolk Island, Australia; died on Feb 5, 1933, in Te Aroha, New Zealand; dau. of Thomas Taylor (convict guard) and Margaret (O'Sullivan) Taylor; m. John Joseph Mackay (farmer), 1862 (died 1908); children: 16.
Immigrated with family to New Zealand (1846); managed family farm while husband was away guarding settlement (1860s); moved to East Tamaki farm after 1863, losing property (1890s); supported family by working as midwife and nurse to mining families in Karangahake and Waikino.
