connubium
connubium A system of marital exchanges, for example between two bands or tribes, by which the men of one group must marry the women of the other (and vice versa). There are several interpretations of these arrangements, for example relating them to the incest taboo, the formation of political alliances, and attempts to define the symbolic boundaries of groups.
