Swiss scientist and stratospheric explorer who with Auguste Piccard (1884-1962) was the first to fly in the stratosphere, using the pressurized balloon gondola invented by Piccard (1931) and reaching a record altitude—since surpassed—of 51,793 feet (15,786 m) over the Bavarian Alps.
