German biologist who made significant progress in the scientific classification of fruits and seeds. In fact, Gaertner's book, Carpology: or treatise on the fruits and seeds of plants (published in 1789), was among the first systematic and scientific treatments of this important matter. In this work, Gaertner discussed over 1,000 different species of plants and their fruits or seeds and illustrated nearly 200 of them.
