Anton Dohrn
Anton Dohrn
1840-1909
German marine biologist who founded the Naples Zoological Station, a research facility where many biologists, especially Germans, studied marine biology. Dohrn was a student of Ernst Haeckel (1834-1919), under whom he became a committed Darwinist. Dohrn was remarkably successful in raising funds for his station, procuring funds from the German government as well as individuals such as Charles Darwin (1809-1882).
