primary succession
primary succession(prisere) A succession initiated on a newly produced bare area (e.g. following glaciation, major earth movements, or a newly formed riverbank). Since no living remnants of a previously existing community are present, successional stages and interactions of the plants and the physical environment are usually fairly clear, at least initially.
