Leichhardt, Friedrich Wilhelm Ludwig
Friedrich Wilhelm Ludwig Leichhardt (frē´drĬkh vĬl´hĕlm lōōd´vĬkh līkh´härt), 1813–1848?, Prussian explorer of Australia. He led (1844–45) an expedition from Moreton Bay to Port Essington and in 1848 set out from Moreton Bay to cross the central part of the continent east to west. After sending a message from Macpherson's Station, on the Cogoon River, he disappeared. No trace of him was ever discovered.
