Addis Ababa
Addis Ababa (Amharic, “new flower”) Capital and largest city in Ethiopia, located on a plateau at c.2440m (8000ft) in the highlands of Shewa province. Addis Ababa was made capital of Ethiopia in 1889. It is the headquarters of the Organization of African Unity (OAU). It is the main centre for the country's vital coffee trade. Industries: food, tanning, textiles, wood products. Pop. (1994 est.) 1,047,300.
