Végh, Sándor (Alexandre) (b Kolozsvár (now Cluj, Rom.), 1905; d Paris, 1997). Hung. violinist and conductor. Played in concert cond. Strauss, 1927. Founded Hungarian Trio 1931, leader then 2nd vn. Hungarian Qt. 1935–40. Gave f. Eur. p. of Bartók's 5th str. qt., Barcelona 1936. Prof. of vn., Budapest Hochschule 1940; founder and leader Végh Qt. 1940–80. Left Hung. 1946, teaching in Zermatt 1952–62, Basle Cons. 1953–63, Fribourg 1954–62, Düsseldorf 1962–79, Salzburg from 1971. Dir., Vegh Chamber Orch. 1968–71, Orch. of Marlboro Fest. 1974–7, Salzburg Mozarteum Camerata from 1979. Salzburg Fest. début 1973 (chamber concert). Worked with Casals at Prades Fest. 1953–69. Has given some of the most successful televised master classes. Founded int. seminar, Prussia Cove, Cornwall, 1972. CBE 1989.
