Susato, Tylman
Susato, Tylman, German music publisher and composer; b.c. 1500; d. probably in Antwerp, c. 1562. He may have been born in Antwerp, where he pursued his career. He was a calligrapher at the Cathedral (1529-30), becoming a trumpeter there in 1531, and then was a town musician (1532-49). After serving as a partner in a printing venture (1541-43), he set up his own press in 1543 and remained active until at least 1561. His press produced 25 books of chansons, 3 books of masses, 19 books of motets, and 11 Musyck boexken. He was a fine composer of cantus firmus chansons for 2 to 3 Voices (1544; c. 1552).
