Manowarda,Josef von
Manowarda,Josef von, esteemed Austrian bass; b. Krako´w, July 3, 1890; d. Berlin, Dec. 24, 1942. He studied in Graz, making his debut there (1911), then sang at the Vienna Volksoper (1915–18) and in Wiesbaden (1918–19). He then was a principal member of the Vienna State Opera (1919–42), and also appeared at the Salzburg Festivals (from 1922), the Bayreuth Festivals (1931, 1934, 1939, 1942), and the Berlin State Opera (1934–42). In addition, he taught at the Vienna Academy of Music (1932–35). Among his notable roles were Osmin, King Marke, Gurnemanz, and King Philip. He created the role of the Messenger in Strauss’s Die Frau ohne Schatten (1919). He also pursued a fine concert career.
