Lawrence, Lucile
Lawrence, Lucile, American harpist and teacher; b. New Orleans, Feb. 7, 1907. She studied with Salzedo and was first harpist in his harp ensemble. She organized her own Lawrence Harp Quintet and appeared as a soloist with major orchs., a chamber music artist, and a recitalist. She taught at the Curtis Inst. of Music in Philadelphia (1927–30), then founded the harp dept. at the Philadelphia Musical Academy; also taught at the Mannes Coll. of Music in N.Y. (from 1945), Boston Univ. (from 1966), the Manhattan School of Music in N.Y. (from 1967), and the Berkshire Music Center in Tanglewood (from 1968).
