Greco, Gaetano
Greco, Gaetano, Italian composer and pedagogue;b. Naples, c. 1657; d. there, c. 1728. He was a pupil of Gennaro Ursino (composition) and Francesco Mirabella (violin). From 1695 to 1706, and again from 1710 to 1728, he taught at the Cons, dei Poveri de Gesu Cristo in Naples. He also served as maestro di cappella of the city of Naples from 1704 to 1720. Among Greco’s notable students were Domenico Scarlatti, Porpora, Piccini, and Vinci. In his own compositions, Greco demonstrated a fine command of keyboard writing, producing admirable toccatas, fugues, and intavolature.
