Garrison, Matt(hew Justin)
Garrison, Matt(hew Justin), jazz bassist; son of Jimmy Garrison; b. N.Y., June 2, 1970 After his father’s death (1976), his mother Maya, a dancer, relocated to Rome, Italy, where he began to study piano and bass guitar. In 1988 he returned to the U.S. and lived and studied with his godfather, Jack Dejohnette, for two years; he also studied with Dave Holland. In 1989 he won the Louis Armstrong Award. He soon began gigging with Gary Burton, Bob Moses, Betty Carter, Mike Gibbs, and Lyle Mays. He has recorded and toured with many different modern bandleaders.
