Took non-singing/speaking role of Fleance in Verdi's Macbeth, Glyndebourne co. (Edinburgh Fest.) 1947. Prod. ass., Glyndebourne 1953. Worked for Gulbenkian Foundation 1951–62. Chairman, Glyndebourne Productions, from 1958. Chairman, London Sinfonietta 1968–88. Replaced original 1934 opera house with larger th. which opened 1994. Knighted 1984. Hamburg Shakespeare Prize 1995. CH 2002.
