Bilt, Peter van der
Bilt, Peter van der, Dutch bass-baritone; b. Jakarta, Dutch East Indies, Aug. 30, 1936; d. Amsterdam, Sept. 25, 1983. He studied in Amsterdam, where he made his operatic debut as Dulcamara in 1960. After appearing as Rossini’s Don Basilio at the San Francisco Opera in 1963, he joined the Deutsche Oper am Rhein in Dusseldorf in 1964; made guest appearances in Vienna, Munich, Edinburgh, Los Angeles, and other music centers. Among his prominent roles were Don Giovanni, Figaro, Don Pasquale, Beckmesser, and Gianni Schicchi. He also sang widely in concerts.
