Assmayer, Ignaz
Assmayer, Ignaz, Austrian composer; b. Salzburg, Feb. 11, 1790; d. Vienna, Aug. 31, 1862. He studied piano, organ, and theory with A. Brunmayrs in Salzburg and later with T. Gerls. In 1815 he moved to Vienna, where he took lessons with Salieri. In 1846 he was appointed 1st Kapellmeister in Vienna, succeeding Eybler. He wrote several oratorios, among them Saul una David, Sauls Tod, and Das Gelübde, which he performed with the Vienna Tonkünstler Soc. He further wrote 21 masses, 2 Requiems, and other sacred works, as well as some 60 instrumental compositions, many of which were publ.
