The Cantor's Son
The Cantor's Son ★½ Dem Khann's Zindl 1937
Real-life story based on Moishe Oysher's life, vaguely influenced by Jolson's “Jazz Singer.” Runaway Oysher joins troupe of performers as a youth, travels to the shores of America, and finds fame once his beautiful voice is discovered. Returning to his mother country to celebrate his parents' golden anniversary, he encounters his childhood sweetheart and falls in love, but another woman is written into the plot to complicate matters. Poorly acted, laughable staging. In Yiddish with English subtitles. 90m/B VHS . Judith Abarbanel, Florence Weiss, Moishe Oysher, Isadore Cashier; D: Ilya Motyleff.
