Marcus, Adele (1905–1995)
American pianist and teacher of some of the 20th century's finest pianists . Born in Kansas City, Missouri,in 1905; died in New York City on May 3, 1995; won the Naumburg Award in 1929; taught at Juilliard.
Adele Marcus studied with Josef Lhévinne in New York and with Artur Schnabel in Berlin. In 1929, she won the coveted Naumburg Award. Although she performed often in public, she was best known for her years of work at the Juilliard School, which she joined in 1954. A superb teacher, her distinguished students included Byron Janis, Agustin Anievas, Tedd Joselson, Santiago Rodriguez, Stephen Hough, Horacio Gutierrez, and many others. In 1980, she established a summer piano festival in Norway.
