amplitude modulation
amplitude modulation (AM) Form of radio transmission. Broadcasts on the short-, medium- and long-wave bands are transmitted by amplitude modulation. The sound signals to be transmitted are superimposed on a constant-amplitude radio signal called the carrier or carrier wave. The resulting modulated radio signal varies in amplitude according to the strength of the sound signal. See also frequency modulation (FM)
