North-West Frontier Province
North-West Frontier Province (NWFP) Province in nw Pakistan bounded by Afghanistan, located near the Khyber Pass; the capital is Peshawar. Important during the time of Alexander , in 1849 it became part of British India and was annexed to Pakistan in 1947. It is largely agricultural. Area: 106,200sq km (41,000sq mi). Pop. (1998) 17,555,000.
